"Martín Ramírez: Between Worlds
The focus of this talk will be the life and work of Mexican artist Martín Ramírez who created an astonishing body of work while living in psychiatric hospitals in California between 1931 and 1963. There has been a resurgence of interest in his work as a result of new research conducted by sociologists Víctor and Kristin Espinosa and a traveling exhibit organized by the American Folk Art Museum. Historical, artistic, biographical, social, and diagnostic dimensions of the artist’s complex history will be presented and discussed from an art therapist's perspective."

"Disability Studios: Views Across an Ocean
This presentation will focus on the results from a survey research project that compared a sample of studio-based art therapy programs in the US with a number of European “ateliers” for artists with disabilities. While operated from differing theoretical positions, the programs in this sample share many similarities in their day-to-day functions. Pressures from the seemingly disconnected worlds of healthcare and the art market influence the operation of these remarkable studios. Comparisons will be made and implications discussed."
