Main Building of the Art / Brut Centre - Courtyard and Entrance
The art / brut centre gugging is the only cultural centre of its kind. Since 2006 it uses three buildings to unite the different `features´ that the Gugging Art Brut has developed over the past 40 years:

The by now world renowned House of Artists, place of work and residence for some important draughtsmen, painters and poets who have long left behind the stigma of being former chronic psychiatric patients – and who are now running their own gallery. A museum, which comprises an extensive collection of Gugging and international art, but which also holds changing exhibitions to present artists of other catagories. A library, a research area, an open studio, a museum shop and a small function venue, the Villa, fit together as modules to complete the whole picture.

The forward slash between "Art" and “Brut” stands for just this diversity of the Centre: for the presentation of Art Brut as well as any other artistic direction and field; for the support of extraordinary artistic endeavours, for work in the gallery and the museum as well as any other cultural work in the studio or the research centre. Furthermore, the Art / Brut-Centre-Projekt (ABC Project) caters for people with a handicap, offering them a training venue for employment in cultural institutions.

The three buildings comprising the Art / Brut Centre are located on top of a hill next to the Vienna Woods, approximately 12.5 miles north-west of Vienna, Austria. The buildings were originally constructed as part of a psychiatric institution in 1890. In 2000 the House of Artists emancipated itself from the hospital administration – the dissolution of the Gugging Hospital in 2007 was therefore of no consequence to the Art / Brut Centre.
We are looking forward to our new neighbour, the Institute of Science and Technology (I.S.T. Austria).
